Wife of Slog isn’t sure the name I’ve given the newish Ford that I’ve been driving lately — “Sluefoot” — is all that complimentary. And I suppose she has a point, if you look only at what the name means and not that to which it refers.
The vehicle that Mother-in-Law of Slog had laid up in Chattanooga was a white Jeep Grand Cherokee with gray rocker panels. One day years ago I looked at it and remarked to Wife of Slog that it made me think of a polar bear. And thereafter, that was my name for it.
Since then I’ve seen white Grand Cherokees of similar vintage without the gray rocker panels and they don’t remind me of polar bears. For some odd reason the slightly darker color down below makes the image.
Anyway, with the Polar Bear moving on to the next phase of its life and this newer Ford assuming the role here that the Jeep was supposed to serve, I decided it was appropriate that it be given an ursine name too — but given that it is black, it needed a name referring to that species of bear.
